-
- DAfx 1.30 Features: (as of 9/1/88)
-
- Ñ MultiFinder compatible
- Ñ Large screen support - the DAfx window can be sized all the way
- up to a MacPaint document, screen size permitting.
- Ñ Replaces entire menu bar for easy access to features
- Ñ Opens MacPaint, DAfx, StartupScreens, Apple ][ Hi-Res & Double Hi-Res,
- Atari ST DEGAS (PI1, PI2, & PI3), and IBM-pc CGA graphic formats
- Ñ Can save in MacPaint, StartupScreen, or DAfx formats
- Ñ A preferences screen with "Open To" (New, Open Dialog, or Clipboard
- contents) options; Undo options; "turbo" grabber mode; black
- background option; and tool display options.
- Ñ Limited image processing for "fuzzing", edge detection, edge tracing,
- image enhancement, and pattern removal.
- Ñ Airbrush option for the spray-paint can.
- Ñ Selection scaling, flipping, and rotating.
-
- What's what?:
-
- Ñ In the Apple menu:
- Ñ About DAfx... displays a brief description of DAfx.
- Ñ Use Application Menus will activate the running application's menus.
- Ñ What's Up Doc... displays the amount of free memory, stack space,
- and MultiFinder memory along with the memory condition of "OK",
- "Getting Tight", or "Hit the Dirt!".
-
- Ñ In the File menu:
- Ñ New will create a new document the same size of a MacPaint picture.
- (The background will clear to black if "Black Background" is enabled.)
- Ñ Open... allows you to open all of the above mentioned pictures. Non-
- Mac pictures must be of type "TEXT" when transferred to the Mac.
- Atari ST pictures must have their file names ending in either ".PI1",
- ".PI2", or ".PI2". The "2x" button applies to Atari ST DEGAS "PI1"
- pictures only.
- Ñ Save as... allows you to save the current picture as a DAfx picture
- (the only format in which the entire Non-MacPaint pictures can be
- saved as), MacPaint, or StatupScreen (the StatupScreen begins in
- the upper left-hand corner of the DAfx window and extends the size of
- a standard Mac screen). [DAfx is the only format you can save in when
- it's locked.]
- Ñ Unlock... is where DAfx is unlocked after you have registered and
- received your personalized key. [Some save options and copy to the
- clipboard are disabled if DAfx is locked.]
-
- Ñ In the Edit menu:
- Ñ Undo will undo the last paint drawing command - depending on which
- "Undo Buffer" in the preferences dialog is used. "Use Screen" will
- only allow undoing of the last paint command as long as the picture has
- not been moved with the hand grabber or if no other windows/dialogs
- have been displayed. Activating the "Pop & Size" window control will
- also prevent undoing the last command. If "Use Hard Disk" is enabled,
- none of the above restrictions apply. Also, if the Mac should bomb or
- the power should go out while "Use Hard Disk" is enabled, the picture
- can be recovered by holding down the Option key while selecting
- Open from the file menu. [NOTE: The file "$DAfx.recover$" in the
- system folder MUST be renamed to something else BEFORE DAfx is OPENED
- to recover its contents! Or it will be lost forever!]
- Ñ Cut will cut the current selection to the clipboard
- Ñ Copy will copy the current selection to the clipboard (if DAfx is
- unlocked).
- Ñ Paste will copy the clipboard contents into DAfx. If only text is
- on the clipboard, it will be drawn with the current font settings
- and justified to the current drawing area. If the text tool is
- active, the first 250 characters will copied into the text selection.
- Ñ Clear will clear the current selection to white (or black if "Black
- Background" is enabled). It will also remove a pasted, rotated, or
- lassoed selection. If the text tool is active, it will clear the
- entire text string (such as the unlock message). Option-Clear will
- remove the entire text selection from the window.
- Ñ Help will display a quick reference screen of the tool and pattern
- palettes and other useful information.
- Ñ Preferences... allows you to change the way DAfx behaves when it is
- opened and while it is open. They are pretty much self explanatory
- or will be as you read through these instructions. But the "Option-
- Fuzz Threshold" sets the threshold used when a Option-Fuzz is
- performed. The lower the #, the darker the picture. The higher
- the number, the brighter the picture will become.
-
- Ñ Special effects in the F/X menu include
- Ñ Invert for inverting the picture or selection. [Black pixels become
- white and vice versa.]
- Ñ "Fuzz" allows limited image processing that can "blur" the picture,
- which makes a line drawing appear as digitized or scanned. It can
- also be used for edge detection, image enhancement, and edge tracing.
- Combined with the "Fuzz Threshold" mentioned above, it can be used to
- remove gray-scale patterns from pictures and smooth the edges. The
- Option- and Command-keys can also be used to perform other "fuzz"es,
- such as edge detection and edge tracing. All eight paint-modes can
- be used to achieve different effects, explore! [For more info, see
- the DAfx picture sampler which details exactly how to achieve these
- effects.]
- Ñ Scale selection allows the current selection to be scaled to one of
- the preset percentages or any custom percentage. It can also scale
- the selection to the clipboard so no detail will be lost when printing
- it to a LaserWriter.
- Ñ Flip vertical and horizontal will flip the selection in the respective
- direction.
- Ñ Rotate left and right will rotate the selection 90í in the
- respective direction. After it is rotated, the selection can be
- easily be moved to a different location.
-
- Ñ Some of the goodies include:
- Ñ The tool palette can be easily displayed or hidden with the Hide Tool
- Palette menu option or the Tab key.
- Ñ Grids can be set up on the x-axis and/or the y-axis to constrain either
- horizontal or vertical movement. The grids can also be enabled when a
- free hand tool is used, such as the pencil, spray-paint can, etc.
- Ñ FatBits will toggle between magnified and normal view. Five levels of
- FatBits are supported, from 2x to 32x. The current magnification level
- is displayed in the lower left-hand corner of the window when FatBits
- is active. The "+" and "-" keys can be used to increase or decrease
- the magnification level respectively. [As can clicking on the magni-
- fying tool in the tool palette, or option-clicking on it.] When
- FatBits is active, the left-hand view is the normal view. The right-
- hand view displays the normal view at the current magnification level.
- Clicking the normal view will move the picture with the hand-grabber
- (using turbo-grabber if enabled). Clicking in the magnified area will
- draw with the pencil tool as long as the mouse button is held down,
- using the current pen-size, paint pattern, and paint mode. To move the
- picture with more control, option-clicking in the magnified view will
- move the picture with the hand. But the turbo-grabber is ignored.
- Ñ A Continuous Spray feature lets the spray-can paint flow until the
- mouse button is released. Usually it only sprays if the spray-can
- is moved.
-
- Ñ The Font menu lists all available fonts in the System. The active font
- has a check mark next to it.
-
- Ñ The Style menu allows changing the text style and justification entered
- with the text tool.
-
- Ñ The Size menu lists the most common font sizes. Those available for the
- current font are outlined. The Other Size... option can be used to enter
- a custom font size.
-
- The DAfx window:
-
- Ñ DAfx currently only supports 16 different patterns, displayed along the
- left-hand side of the window.
- Ñ Each of the 16 patterns is framed in black and clicking in one of
- the 16 pattern areas will make that pattern the "active" pattern,
- signified with the rotating marquee around it.
- Ñ At the top of the 16 patterns is the current pattern display. The
- thick square outline displays the current "paint" pattern used for
- all drawing tools. The inside of this square displays the current
- "fill" pattern, used to fill the inside of objects drawn (rectangles,
- ovals, etc.). There is a small border between the paint and fill
- pattern displays which shows the "outline" pattern. This pattern
- is used to draw the outline of text if either the "Outline" or
- "Shadow" menu items in the Style menu are enabled.
- Ñ The paint, fill, and outline patterns can be any one of the 16
- patterns or transparent - signified with diagonal lines.
- Ñ To set the paint pattern, click in the paint pattern display area to
- set it to the active pattern. Or double-click one of the 16 pattern
- display boxes.
- Ñ To set the fill pattern, click in the fill pattern display area to
- set it to the active pattern. Or Option-double-click one of the 16
- pattern display boxes.
- Ñ To set the outline pattern, Command-click in one of the 16 pattern
- display areas.
- Ñ To set the paint or fill patterns to transparent, double-click in
- their respective display area.
- Ñ To set the outline pattern to transparent, Command-click anywhere
- in the paint, fill, or outline display areas.
-
- Ñ The top of the window displays the tool palette, which contains:
- [NOTE: With most of the tools, the shift will constrain tool movement
- to either horizontal or vertical motions only.]
- Ñ The Pencil tool draws with the current paint pattern, pen-size,
- and paint-mode.
- Ñ The Spray-paint can sprays an area equal to that of the current
- pen-size and uses the current paint pattern and mode. Holding down
- the Command-key before you spray will apply a thicker coat of paint.
- The Option-key will product a "airbrush" effect. Use large "square"
- pen sizes for best results.
- Ñ The Paint Roller will roll with one of the eight roller patterns.
- The default paint is "black". Use the option-key to override this
- and use the current paint and fill patterns. (NOTE: The default and
- current paint patterns produce different results when used with the
- roller "Mask".)
- Ñ The hand is used to grab the picture and move it about the window.
- The space-bar can also be used at any time to move the picture.
- [Or Command-space if the text tool is active.]
- Ñ The Line, Rectangle, Oval, and Rounded-Rectangle tools draw their
- respective object. They can be used to draw squares and circles with
- the constrain (shift) key, draw from center with the Option-key,
- and draw multiple objects with the Command-key. The objects are
- drawn with the current paint and fill patterns (if they aren't
- transparent) and in the current paint mode when the mouse button is
- released.
- Ñ The Eraser tool will erase a portion of a picture. It can erase
- in black with the Option-key or if "Black Background" is enabled in
- the preferences dialog. It can also erase the current window area
- by double-clicking the tool in the tool palette (in black if either
- the option-key or "Black Background" is enabled).
- Ñ The Paint Bucket will fill any enclosed area or the whole window
- if it isn't enclosed, using the current PAINT pattern. It also
- uses the current paint-mode!
- Ñ The text tools allows adding text to the picture using the current
- font, style, and size. It also uses the current paint, outline, and
- fill patterns. Therefore, any part of the text entered can be one of
- 16 patterns, or transparent! First define the area to justify the text
- in by dragging an outline (all the keys used for the rectangle
- tool can also be used). Then type in the text or change the font,
- style, or size with the respective menus. [Because it can take a long
- time to update the text display, the window is refreshed after no
- typing has taken place for approximately 1 second.] The Backspace key
- deletes the last character and the clear key removes the entire text
- string.
- Ñ The selection tool can be used to move a portion of the picture, copy
- a portion to the clipboard, or define the area that the "F/X" options
- work on. The current paint mode is also used during the move!
- Ñ The Lasso tool allows the border around the selected object to be
- ignored. With the Option-key or "Black Background" enabled, it can
- also lasso objects on a black background. Invert can also be used
- on the lassoed object to perform some special effects - try it!
- Ñ The Magnifying glass puts DAfx in FatBits mode. (See FatBits above)
- [NOTE: Selecting any other tool in the tool palette will deactivate
- FatBits mode.]
-
- Ñ Next to the tool area is the Pen-Size selector/display. Clicking in
- this area will define the current pen-size. The shift-, option-, and
- command-keys can be used to mold the shape. Double-clicking in the
- pen-size area will reset the pen to a 1-by-1 pixel.
-
- Ñ Then there is the Pen Mode area. It lists the eight pen modes that
- are supported by the Macintosh's QuickDraw routines. Clicking in any
- of the eight pen-mode areas will activate that mode for all subsequent
- paint operations. [Extremely powerful when combined with the "Fuzz"
- command!]
-
- Ñ The paint-roller pattern selector/display is to the right of the
- pen-mode selector. Clicking in the small areas with the arrow-heads
- on the left or right side of the pattern display will select the next
- pattern in that direction.
-
- Ñ Finally, the "Mask" area on the end contains four outwardly pointed
- arrow-heads. Clicking in a arrow-head will enable or disable it.
- Clicking in the center will disable all of them and double-clicking
- in the center will enable all of them. The mask is used to perform
- some special effects while painting with the paint-roller. Selecting
- different directions will produce different effects.
-
- Other stuff of interest:
-
- Ñ DAfx also supports the zoom window feature and is available on all Macs
- that have the 128K ROMs or later. The window can be sized with the
- "Pop & Size" window control. Moving the mouse to the lower right-
- hand corner of the screen will activate the "size box". Clicking
- at this time allows you to re-size the window. The "Pop & Size" box
- can be disabled by holding down the shift-, option-, or command-keys
- or by locking the Caps-lock key.
-
- Ñ Some tools and options may be inoperable without the 128K ROMs.
-
- Ñ DAfx requires at least a Mac 512 to run. More than 512K of
- memory may be needed to operate DAfx inside of other programs.
-
- Ñ DAfx works with Suitcase, the Font/DA Juggler, and on a Macintosh II.
-
- Ñ DAfx does NOT support color - yet!
